Local Business, Local Faces
One of the things I enjoy most about portrait photography is getting to photograph people in places that are part of their everyday lives. Their shops, studios, businesses, and the spaces where they spend much of their time.
I had the opportunity to photograph a number of local business owners for Heart of the Business, a series produced by the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce that highlights the people and businesses that make up our community. The assignments took me into flower shops, art galleries, a brewery, a fitness business, and plenty of other places around Yellow Springs and beyond. Each person had a different story, and each location brought something different to the photograph.
These were generally quick sessions, often 15 minutes or less, so I worked with the surroundings to create portraits that felt natural to the person and their business. That's one of the things I enjoy about environmental portrait photography. You don't need a studio or elaborate setup. Sometimes the place where someone works tells you just as much about them as the expression on their face.
It was a fun project to be part of, and a chance to photograph some of the people who make our local business community what it is.
If you're working on something and want portraits that actually catch you in it, reach out and we'll figure out what that looks like.
